چکیده

The work presented in this thesis employed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to determine the volume and metabolite profile of brain grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) in people with clinically early relapsingremitting m ultiple sclerosis (MS). C ross-sectional MRI and clinical data was obtained from 27 subjects with relapsing-remitting MS within 3 years of first symptom onset, and com pared with MRI data from 29 normal control subjects. Subsets o f these groups also provided longitudinal data over 18 months for volumetric analysis. The principal observations were that: GM and WM atrophy may be observed early in the clinical course o f the disease; WM atrophy was more apparent at baseline, but over the period of follow-up GM atrophy occurred more rapidly than that o f WM; changes in metabolite concentrations were found in GM and WM suggesting neuronal and axonal dam age, and WM glial activation and or proliferation; WM lesion loads explained a fraction of GM and WM atrophy and metabolite variability; clinical outcome related more closely to tissue metabolite changes (GM glutamate and glutamine, and normal-appearing WM inositol) than atrophy at this stage of the disease.

The Optimization of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Pulse Sequences in Order to Better Detection of Multiple Sclerosis Plaques

Background and objective: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive technique to detect multiple sclerosis (MS) plaques in central nervous system. In some cases, the patients who were suspected to MS, Whereas MRI images are normal, but whether patients don’t have MS plaques or MRI images are not enough optimized enough in order to show MS plaques? The aim of the current study is ...

An improvement in RTM method to image steep dip petroleum bearing structures and its superiority to other methods

In this paper, first the limitations of the ray-based method and the one-way wave-field extrapolation migration (WEM) in imaging steeply dipping structures are discussed by some examples. Then a new method of the reverse time migration (RTM), used in imaging such complex structures is presented. The proposed method uses a new wave-field extrapolator called the Leapfrog-Rapid Expansion Method (L...

CLINICAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN AUDITORY BRAIN STEM RESPONSE AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING IN PATIENTS WITH DEFINITE MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

In an attempt to assess objectively the integrity of the auditory pathways in 30 patients with definite multiple sclerosis (MS), an audiometric evaluation was performed and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were obtained. Stressing the auditory system by increasing the stimulation rate showed some enhancement in the identification of MS. 24 (RO%) patients had an abnormal ABR along with c...

A Novel Classification Method using Effective Neural Network and Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging of Brain White Matter in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging (QMTI) is often used to quantify the myelin content in multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions and normal appearing brain tissues. Also, automated classifiers such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) can significantly improve the identification and classification processes of MS clinical datasets. Objective: We classified patients with relapsing-r...
